Concept Evaluation

Stormie Mills

Illustrations/street art

Stormie Mills characters have a deep, dark personality as if they are stuck in a nightmare.Contrasting their dark outer is the "silver lining on the cloud. Mills paints with a grey tone palatte, black, grey and white. But Mills adds he's own touch to the dark palatte, silver. It represents dreams, and to always remember to follow them.

*Notes from AGIdeas

"Stormie Mills has established a strong following for his unique statements on life, his imagery highlights the strength needed to continue onward in the face of adversity shining the spotlight on the superhero in all of us."

Trends & Designers

Dana Arnett

Street Art/Grunge style

Working with Converse, Arnett created a design for the classic shoe through bringing its most famous era through, the 90s. At the time where the fashion was trash, everything was done simple and to the point, even the music.
The handwritten font, the recycled looking paper, mixed media and monochromatic colour palatte all reflect the classic era where it all began.
The crisp, clean edges and photo of the modern metro sexual man represents where Converse invision to go. While they like to keep their classic grunge feel, Arnett shows their versatility towards todays market and style. By doing this Arnett has successfully demonstrated to the audience that even with todays fashion that the classic style shoe will appropriate with your outfit.

Aboriginal Motifs

Functions and Philosophies
Confidentiality
The person doing the art form must discuss any restrictions with the group before starting. Some people may not want their name written and that must be respected. No names or photographs of deceased Indigenous people are allowed to be on show, the family members are to be notified if you would like permission to use either a name or a photograph. If sacred or secret material is used you are in breech of the Indigenous law.

Consent
Consent is needed before reproducing any Indigenous artwork or designs.
It is most effective when both groups are aware of how each culture views issues, the difference between cultures, can smooth out cultural misunderstandings and if they find the right people to consult with. Time must be given for consultation and can sometimes take several meetings, if the outcome is "no" then it shouldn't be taken personally as other factors have been considered to make that decision.

Moral rights and Issues
All artwork must be original indigenous works, produced by Indigenous people as to them it is important and respectful.

Native American Motifs

Washington Redskins

The Redskins are an American football team that begun in 1932.
Logo timeline http://www.sportslogos.net/team.php?id=168

Logo
The logo is a Red Indian's head, side profile with long black hair, dark skin and feathers centred in a yellow circle. Larger feathers are on the outside of the logo on the left. The logo is clean and crisp. It looks almost like a screen print because of its simplicity. The circle sets a focus on the face, but the larger scale feathers balance out the emphasis.

Logo Concept
Since 1932 the Redskins logo has changed 8 times but the general idea and style has remained the same. The original logo looked embroided and has the Indian face with the yellow circle around it. In 1983 they changed their logo back to the same logo from 1972 and it has remained the same ever since.
The logo is controversial due to the Red Indian being on the logo being labelled as "racist".
The Redskins logo is intended to show the strength and wisdom of the Indians, I think the design does show the Indians in a positive light and they have achieved their intentions.

Melbourne Sports Museum Critiques

The Olympic Rings

Date: 1913
Artist: Pierre De Coubertin
Medium: Cotton and thread

The design displays 5 rings, blue, red, black, yellow and green. These 5 colours are to represent the unity of the world as at least one of the colours are in each nationalities flag.
The design is completely centred against a white background achieving a strong use of figure and ground. The linking of the rings creates unity and makes the message solid.
The centre ring is black which makes the other colours more striking, this makes it more balanced as a whole. The Olympic rings was designed during the Expressionism era in art, it does relate to this period in the way of its expressive use of colour but to me it has more of a minimalism appeal to it because it has no heavy textures, just kept simple with a lot of white space.

Michael Klim Swimsuit

Date: 2000
Artist: Speedo
Medium: Swimsuit material

The bathing suit worn by Michael Klim at the 2000 Sydney Olympic games was designed by Speedo. The swim suit is navy blue with bright green stitching. On the side on the hip it has “Aus” with little stars, the Speedo logo and the Olympic flag symbol. The navy blue reflects the navy blue on the Australian flag the white logos are emphasized against it. The green stitching creates definition and keeps the suit looking balanced. My opinion is that the suit is bland, but when its for a professional race less is more therefore the green stitching it what gives it its that tiny bit of emphasis needed.
